Overview
A fertility assessment is the set of clinical steps used to understand why a pregnancy has not occurred despite regular unprotected sex, or to review fertility before trying to conceive. Assessment usually starts with a GP or fertility specialist taking a history from both partners where relevant, examining for common causes, and arranging tests. It is not the same as IVF; IVF is one possible treatment after causes and options have been reviewed.
NHS guidance generally suggests seeing a GP if you have not conceived after about a year of trying, sooner if the woman is aged 36 or over, or if either partner already knows about a fertility problem. Investigations may include ovulation assessment, semen analysis, checks for infections, hormone blood tests, and imaging of the uterus or fallopian tubes when indicated. In about a quarter of couples a clear cause is not found.
Private fertility clinics often offer packaged “fertility assessments” or consultations with faster access to tests. Licensing and standards for assisted reproduction clinics in the UK involve the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) when treatment such as IVF is provided. Choosing private assessment does not remove the need for careful interpretation of results and discussion of next steps.
Before booking, ask what is included for each partner, how results are explained, whether counselling is available, and how findings connect to NHS pathways or HFEA-licensed treatment if needed.
