ADHD

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition. Features can include persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that are more frequent or severe than expected for age and that affect daily life at school, work or home. Presentation varies; some people mainly have inattentive features.

ADHD is not caused by poor parenting or laziness, and it is not diagnosed from a short online quiz. Assessment usually involves a detailed history, information from more than one setting when possible, and consideration of other explanations such as anxiety, sleep problems, learning difficulties or trauma. In adults, childhood history is also explored.

NHS pathways for assessment can involve long waits in some areas. Private ADHD assessment clinics offer alternative access that some people compare. Medication, when used, is only one part of care and requires specialist involvement and monitoring. MHI lists a small number of related providers where stored data clearly supports an ADHD focus; coverage is limited.

Assessment is usually specialist-led after GP referral or private referral. It includes developmental and current history, collateral information when available, and screening for co-occurring conditions. Treatment discussions may include psychoeducation, environmental strategies, psychological approaches and medication in selected cases with monitoring.
